Median Estimation in Sample Surveys

چکیده
In a recent paper Maritz and Jarrett (1978) proposed a small-sample estimate of the variance of sample medians from continuous population. In this paper their methods are adapted to median estimation in s~atified sampling without replacement from finite populations. A weighted sample median for estimating the median of heavy-tailed or skewed populations is proposed. Its asymptotic normal distribution is derived, and optimal allocation is discussed. A systematic statistic based on the ordered observations in the complete sample, for the estimation of the variance of the weighted median is proposed. This variance estimate is shown to be a consistent estimate of the weighted median asymptotic variance. Initial simulation results suggest a trimmed version of this estimate to be an efficient and computationally feasible alternative. Some results are also obtained for stratified sampling of clusters. The weighted median, based on the pooled clusters in each atratum, is shown to be a consistent and asymptotically normal estimate of the population median. A "Bookstrap" estimate of the variance of this estimate is proposed.

Effect of Measurement Errors on a Class of Estimators of Population Mean Using Auxiliary Information in Sample Surveys
We consider the problem of estimation the population mean of the study variate Y in presence of measurement errors when information on an auxiliary character X is known. A class of estimators for population means using information on an auxiliary variate X is defined. Expressions for its asymptotic bias and mean square error are obtained. Optimum conditions are obtained for which the mean...
متن کاملCan Wavelet Denoising Improve Motor Unit Potential Template Estimation?
Background: Electromyographic (EMG) signals obtained from a contracted muscle contain valuable information on its activity and health status. Much of this information lies in motor unit potentials (MUPs) of its motor units (MUs), collected during the muscle contraction. Hence, accurate estimation of a MUP template for each MU is crucial. Objective: To investigate the possibility of improv...
متن کاملChild Mortality Estimation: Appropriate Time Periods for Child Mortality Estimates from Full Birth Histories
BACKGROUND Child mortality estimates from complete birth histories from Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) surveys and similar surveys are a chief source of data used to track Millennium Development Goal 4, which aims for a reduction of under-five mortality by two-thirds between 1990 and 2015. Based on the expected sample sizes when the DHS program commenced, the estimates are usually based o...
متن کاملComparison of Small Area Estimation Methods for Estimating Unemployment Rate
Extended Abstract. In recent years, needs for small area estimations have been greatly increased for large surveys particularly household surveys in Sta tistical Centre of Iran (SCI), because of the costs and respondent burden. The lack of suitable auxiliary variables between two decennial housing and popula tion census is a challenge for SCI in using these methods. In general, the...
متن کاملInvestigation of linear and non-linear estimation methods in highly-skewed gold distribution
The purpose of this work is to compare the linear and non-linear kriging methods in the mineral resource estimation of the Qolqoleh gold deposit in Saqqez, NW Iran. Considering the fact that the gold distribution is positively skewed and has a significant difference with a normal curve, a geostatistical estimation is complicated in these cases. Linear kriging, as a resource estimation method, c...
